Cyclists ride the Tour de Cure for Diabetes

adatour-7A banner from the American Diabetes Association says “every 21 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.”
Across America, cyclists are riding in 40 regional Tour de Cure events.
The Tour de Cure is a series of fund-raising cycling events held in 40 states nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association.

Braving the early morning chill and the late morning downpour in Sacramento, 30 of my friends and coworkers joined other cyclists in our local event. Riders from communities, corporations, and cycling clubs had their choice of 100-mile, 100-kilometer, 50-kilometer, and 10-mile routes. In the 10-mile route, entire families participated, some carting their tiniest ones in tot trailers.

Diabetes has never been at the forefront of my awareness, until 2008, when I learned that both my coworker’s son and my supervisor were diagnosed with it. My company has chosen to become a title sponsor for many related events, because of we have data that shows the relationship between an annual eye exam and the early detection of this and other medical conditions.
